It was awarded for acts of bravery in the face of the enemy and was the most commonly awarded variant of the Iron Cross during WW1. The front of the 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class features a crown at the top, the letter “W” for Kaiser Wilhelm II in the center, and the year 1914 at the bottom. The reverse side has oak leaves in the center and the year 1813 at the bottom, marking the year the Iron Cross was first established. The 2nd class Iron Cross was awarded for a single act of bravery in combat. Recipients typically wore the medal’s ribbon through the second buttonhole of their tunic.
