Japanese Wakizashi. Three hole nakago (tang) which seems to be cut down with a portion of signature left. Tsuka (hilt/handle) is very basic and seems to just be slide on this tang with no peg hole and very basic kashira (end cap) with leather type wrap damaged and missing in parts. The tsuka does not seem to belong to this sword, just stuck on there as a temp handle, nothing securing it to tang, just slides on and off. Basic design cut-out darkened/blackened copper tsuba with a seppa (spacer) on each side and with very basic plain iron Fuchi (sword handle collar). Two-piece habaki (blade collar). Blade with a lot of wear, graying, openings, scratches, and spotting. Leather covered saya (wooden scabbard) in very worn condition and has two rings attached. I believe to be Edo period blade and fittings. Blade length approximately 18 1/2 inches and overall length approximately 24 inches. Very heavily worn and damaged condition. Could be used as a project piece or parts piece.
Additional Notes: Wakizashi blades are typically between 12 inches to 24 inches or (30-60cm) or (between 1 and 2 shaku). The wakizashi (side inserted sword) is one of the traditionally made Japanese swords (nihonto) worn by the samurai in feudal Japan. Its name refers to the practice of wearing it inserted through one’s obi or sash at one’s side, whereas the larger tachi sword was worn slung from a cord.
The Japanese sword fuchi is a key component of a Japanese sword’s hilt. It is a metal collar that fits snugly between the tsuka (handle) and the tsuba (hand guard). The fuchi serves several important functions such as structural stability, it secures the handle components, ensuring the tsuka-ito (handle wrap) doesn’t unravel and providing overall stability. It also provides aesthetic appeal, often intricately designed, the fuchi can be adorned with engravings, inlays, or other decorations, reflecting the craftsmanship and status of the sword. It also provides connection by complementing the tsuba and kashira (butt cap), creating a unified and visually pleasing look for the sword’s hilt.
