United States WW2 Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) Empty Case. WW2 “Coffin” style case. No medal, just case. Case used from WW2 through Vietnam. Worn condition.

Additional Notes: The Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) is the U.S. Army’s 2nd highest military decoration for soldiers who display extraordinary heroism in combat with an armed enemy force. During WW2, just over 5,000 awards were made. A number of recipients of the Distinguished Service Cross in earlier conflicts were again honored in WW2. The Distinguished Service Cross was first awarded during World War I. In addition, a number of awards were bestowed for actions which took place before World War I.

For American medal cases, the U.S. “coffin” style cases were ww2 produced. However, the “coffin” style cases/boxes were used right up to and through the Vietnam conflict as supplies of the medal boxes were used up (so you can find WW2, Korea, and Vietnam era medals in this style of case). Next, clear plastic cases/boxes were used in the 1950’s and 60’s (typically you see Vietnam era medals in these cases). The clear plastic cases were followed up by the blue vinyl-type grained textured cases/boxes with the metal rims which were utilized in the 1970’s follow up by blue vinyl-type smooth covered cases with metal rims. After that, there were blue vinyl-type smooth covered cases without metal rims. Finally small hard shell plastic blue cases were introduced.
