The Harper’s Ferry Musket from 1828 is a fascinating piece of history. It was part of the Model 1816 series, which underwent improvements in 1822 and 1828, leading to the Model 1822/28. These muskets were originally flintlock firearms but were later converted to percussion ignition between 1849 and 1854. The conversion process involved replacing the flintlock mechanism with a percussion system, making them more reliable. The musket was a .69 caliber smoothbore weapon with a 42-inch barrel and was manufactured at the Harper’s Ferry Armory in Virginia (now West Virginia). It played a role in the Civil War, used by both Union and Confederate forces. The design was influenced by the French Charleville Model 1777 Musket, showcasing the international exchange of military technology.
