Additional Notes: The 1864 $500 Confederate States of America bank note is a fascinating piece of history. This high denomination note features a portrait of General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, one of the most famous Confederate commanders. It was issued during the later part of the Civil War, in February 1864, and is notable for its pink and black ink. The back of the note is blank because the Confederacy ran out of back plates for this series. This note is a symbol of the Confederacy’s fading fortunes at that time. Despite its high denomination, it was more symbolic than practical due to the dire state of the Confederate economy.
