United States Gerber Mark II knife with sheath. Gray Armorhide, crinkle finish, survival knife. I believe this one is the Type 5 with the wide wasp, with the slightly coarser fine serrations about 12 teeth per inch and Gerber Portland Ore USA slant 2 logo. The Gray Type 5 knives are found on early 1974 to mid 1976 knives in the approximate serial range of 034113 – 050796. Serial number on blade is 041325 which should date this one to about 1975. Sheath has some wear and is marked Gerber Portland Ore 97223 USA. Worn condition.
Additional Notes: The Gerber Mark II gray handles are found on the late 1968 through late 1977 knives. There is a great deal of variation found in the gray handle knives, including blade profiles (narrow wasp and wide wasp), manufacturing process (forged and hand ground) and non-serrated blades as well as 3 serration patterns (two fine and one coarse). There are at least two shades of gray used on the gray armorhide handles, possibly more, the lighter gray seemed to appear on the earlier knives.
Handle finishes: Cat’s Tongue was used on 1967-1968 knives. Gold was an option on even 100 serial numbered knife handles on early 1967-1968 knives. The Gray was used on 1968-1977 knives. Yellow was used on 1971-1974 dive knives. Orange was used on some of the 1971-1974 knives. Black was used on 1977-1998 knives.
