United States M1892 Krag Bayonet dated 1897. Marked on one side of blade ricasso: 1897, and marked on other side: U.S. There is also a protectant coating applied to blade, appears to have been on the blade for quite a while. Scabbard has a lot of heavy wear to paint and an indentation to scabbard. Worn condition bayonet.
Additional Notes: The United States M1892 Krag Bayonet was designed for use with the Krag-Jørgensen rifles, which were the first repeating rifles adopted by the U.S. Army. This bayonet features a single-edged blade with a fuller, measuring about 11 3/4 inches in length, and an overall length of approximately 16 1/4 inches. It was based on the Swiss M1889 bayonet and came with a steel scabbard that included a swivel belt loop. Although the Krag rifles and their bayonets were largely replaced by the Springfield rifles by the time of WW1, they were still used for training purposes and by some rear-echelon troops. The M1892 bayonet is a fascinating piece of military history, reflecting the transition to more modern weaponry.
