United States Vietnam MIA/POW bracelet named Lewis Meyer Jr and dated 1-31-68. Marker marked on back “VIVA M” Typically, these were worn to honor and increase awareness of MIA/POW soldiers. The idea was that these bracelets were worn until the POW returned to the United States. The concept for POW bracelets originated in 1970 by two college students looking to support American troops in Vietnam without being involved in the controversy of demonstrations and protests. Through their student group VIVA (Voices in Vital America), they were able to distribute millions of bracelets and other memorabilia nationwide to support U.S. MIA/POWs and raise awareness. This is an example of one of the early 1970s bracelets.
