United States WW2 MKII Navy “Talker” Gunner Combat Helmet. The helmet has a good portion of the original sea blue paint with a cork applied in the paint to provide a textured, non-reflective surface. Marked on the inside rim USN and MK-2. The Navy MK-2 helmets have become harder to find recently, especially original WW2 examples with a good liner and legible markings. No Chinstrap. Worn condition.
Additional Notes: U.S. Navy decided in 1942 to commission a special helmet for sailors posted on decks and tasked with transmitting orders by sound-powered telephone. The new helmet was to protect “exposed deck personnel” and accommodate a telephone headset, as well as, to be usable while wearing a gas mask and binoculars. The helmet was made of non-magnetic Hadefield manganese steel. It was designated as the “USN MK-2” and was at the time the largest helmet ever used in US service.
