WW2 Imperial Japanese Navy Dirk . NNJ440

$780.00

Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) Dirk. Quality shagrin covered scabbard in decent condition (has some wear to upper mid-section of covering, not quite sure the type of shagrin material of this covering, however, has a great look and a bit unusual to find this style). Nice condition gilded brass fittings (with a copper-alloy type coating in areas). Scabbard locking button mechanism still in place and functions properly. Ray skin grip with triple wire wrap, some of the center portion of the triple wire wrap is missing from a portion of the grip. The grip has both the gilt brass Menuki on either side in the standard simple five petal cherry blossom pattern. Blade has nice one-piece gilded copper habaki (blade collar) with “raining arrows” type design and the blade is in good condition with some areas of wear and spotting to blade finish. A good example of an Imperial Japanese Navy Officer Dirk.

Additional Notes: The Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) M1883 (Model 1883) Officers Dress or Parade Dirks were given to officers when they were first commissioned and were not intended to be any type of functional weapon. They began to be issued starting in the 1880s and their use continued until the end of WW2.
