Additional Notes: The Japanese sword fuchi is a key component of a Japanese sword’s hilt. It is a metal collar that fits snugly between the tsuka (handle) and the tsuba (hand guard). The fuchi serves several important functions such as structural stability, it secures the handle components, ensuring the tsuka-ito (handle wrap) doesn’t unravel and providing overall stability. It also provides aesthetic appeal, often intricately designed, the fuchi can be adorned with engravings, inlays, or other decorations, reflecting the craftsmanship and status of the sword. It also provides connection by complementing the tsuba and kashira (butt cap), creating a unified and visually pleasing look for the sword’s hilt.
