Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) Officer Sword (Shin-gunto) in WW2 fittings. One-hole nakago (tang) that is nicely signed on both sides of tang. The blade habaki (blade collar) is single piece copper habaki with “rain of arrows” design. Blade in nice overall condition with nice straight harmon (temper line) with some graying, scratches, and wear. The sword has the earlier type brass tsuba (hand guard) with multiple cut outs. The military-style hilt (tsuka) is the typical officer type, it is constructed of a wood base, covered in ray skin. However, the brown wrapping (Ito) is missing and also missing the traditional 3 brass cherry blossoms menuki that would have been below the wrap. Hilt is rough condition. Also, missing locking push button. The metal scabbard (saya) is in very worn condition, missing the scabbard drag. Also, has “captured tag” attached to scabbard ring. The blade is approximately 27 inches in length, approximately 36 1/2 inches overall length. This sword overall feels slightly larger and “bulkier” that your typical army officer sword. If you could find a nice replacement handle or re-wrap the handle this one would be a nice example. Overall, very heavily worn condition.
