Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) Officer Sword (Shin-gunto) in Kyu Gunto mounts. 1886 pattern Kyu Gunto. One-hole nakago (tang) is unsigned. The blade habaki (blade collar) is single piece brass habaki with “rain of arrows” design. Blade in nice overall condition with some graying, scratches, and wear. The military-style hilt (tsuka) is the typical officer type, it is constructed of a wood base, covered in ray skin and has a D-Guard. The metal nickel-plated scabbard (saya) is in worn condition with wear and lifting to plating in several areas. The blade is approximately 27 inches in length, approximately 35 1/2 inches overall length. Overall worn condition.
Additional Notes: The Japanese Kyu gunto, also known as Russo-Japanese swords, were used by Japanese Army and Naval officers in WW2, the earlier Russo-Japanese war, and Imperial Japan’s colonial conflicts. These swords were a hybrid of katana and western saber and were mounted from 1883 until 1945.
