US M1850 Civil War High-Grade Presentation Sword by Sauerbier . SU101

United States Civil War Officer High-Grade Presentation Sword. M1850 Officer’s Sword. Elaborate scabbard is engraved near top. Difficult to make out the engraving details, appears to most likely be something like: Presented to Lieut. H.B. Waltman by the members of Co.E. 9th Regt. Penn Cav??. Silver Grip with Union shield on face area of upper hilt. Blade is marker marked on ricasso H. Sauerbier Newark NJ. The sword handle has a Sauerbier non-regulation type eagle guard hilt with logo above eagle: E. Plurieus Unum, Sauerbier made some very unique, usual, and creative sword designs. Has a double engraved blade, the blade appears to be possibly either re-chromed and/or polished a bit where you cannot make out some of the original engraving details on the blade. Blade length approximately 31 3/4 inches, approximately 37 inches overall length. Worn condition, a very nice, unusual, and creative high-grade presentation sword.

 

Additional Notes: The sword marker Henry Sauerbier made a variation of the M1840 swords as well as non-regulation cavalry enlisted and officer’s swords plus M1850 foot officer swords, and M1860 staff and field officer’s swords. He is noted for making very unusual presentation swords with picture, soldier-head, and precious stone pommels. He utilized silver and pewter hilts and as well as silver and pewter decorations on the hilts and scabbards on these swords. He also sold swords to several other retailers, including Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, in addition to selling blades to many silversmiths.
