US Army Combat Tropical Jacket – X-Small-Reg . UA1213

United States Army Slant Pocket Combat Tropical Jacket. Jungle Fatigues. Third pattern, Type III, Class 1. Contract Tag coming loose on interior, tag is marked: Coat, Man’s, Cotton, W/R Rip-Stop, Poplin, OG 107, Class 1 and contract dated 70. Size tag marked X-Small-Regular. Vietnam era jacket. Worn and used condition missing one lower front closure button and one cuff button.

Additional Notes: There were 3 basic patterns or types of Tropical Combat Uniforms (Jungle Fatigues) used in Vietnam with the third style being divided into subcategories (Class I and Class II).

First Pattern, Type I: The first pattern jungle fatigues were adopted in 1963 and were made of cotton poplin in Army Shade Olive Green 107 (OG-107). The pattern is easily distinguishable as the closure pocket buttons were not covered. The jungle fatigue jacket also had shoulder epaulettes, side take up tabs, and an integrated gas flap that could be buttoned internally to better cover the neck and prevent chemical agents from entering through the front button closure.

Second Pattern, Type II: In August of 1964, there was a revision to the jungle fatigue design. It was found that the exposed buttons had a tendency to snag on brush and addressed this issue. The buttons on the jacket pockets were now covered, but the epaulettes, side take up tabs, and gas flap were retained. The OG-107 color was retained. This style tropical combat jacket entered Vietnam in late 1965 and was soon to be replaced in 1967 by the third pattern jungle fatigues.

Third pattern, Type III: The Third Pattern fatigues which were introduced in late 1966 and early 1967 were a simplified version of the second pattern. The jacket lost its side take up tabs, gas flap, and shoulder epaulettes. This pattern was issued in two classes: Class I was OG-107 or Olive Green and Class II was ERDL Camouflage in either green dominant or brown dominant.
