Additional Notes: The Soviet Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd class, was a military badge awarded to soldiers in the Soviet armed forces, security troops, and partisans for heroic deeds during the Great Patriotic War (WW2). It was established in May of 1942, and was the first Soviet order created during the war. The 2nd class of the order featured a red enamel five-pointed star made of silver, with straight rays in the background, crossed sabre and a Mosin rifle. The rays in the background were silver for the 2nd class. The central disc had a golden hammer and sickle on a red enamel background, surrounded by a white enamel ring with the words “ОТЕЧЕСТВЕННАЯ ВОЙНА” (“Patriotic War”). The order was awarded for various heroic deeds, such as shooting down enemy aircraft, destroying tanks, or capturing warships. During the war, approximately 951,652 2nd class orders were issued. In 1985, during the 40th anniversary of Victory Day, all surviving veterans of the war were awarded either the 2nd or 1st class of the order.
